Youth Allies’ Climate Change Project is designed to 1) Educate
the community about climate change and 2) Promote actions that
reduce CO2 emissions in Santa Fe;
• The project includes research and training in climate change
for the youth leaders of the project including partnerships with
New Energy Economy, the City’s Sustainability Commission, 350.org,
and the Santa Fe Climate Change Working Group.
• An annual community event held on October 24th, the
International Day of Climate Action which raises awareness about
the need for action on local, national, and international fronts.
This year's event included over 500 people in a human postcard
photo, a march, and rally at the roundhouse.
• A No Idling Campaign which encourages Santa Fe residents to
take responsibility for their own carbon footprint – using the
example of turning off car engines while idle at drive-thrus and
pickup lines.
• An annual Earth Day Event which provides local sustainability
organizations the opportunity to conduct community outreach and
promote strategies for carbon footprint reduction.
• Youth Voices for Climate Action campaign which includes policy
advocacy in partnership with local organizations. This year, for
instance, three youth will testify in front of the NM Environmental
Improvement Board (EIB) in support of a state cap on carbon
emissions.
The project design includes two annual events in October and
April – both of which engage other local environmental
organizations, faith groups, and youth providers as well as include
service-learning opportunities for local youth, a No Idling Public
Education campaign conducted in partnership with local area banks,
fast food restaurants, and schools – as well as Youth Media
Project. The project also includes peer education trainings
conducted in the Santa Fe Public Schools.
